We are just wrapping up on our first three Expression Engine sites. Here is a break down

Bubby’s Pie Co.
Bubby’s Pie Co. is a American Cookery located in Tribeca and DUMBO Brooklyn. Long known for it’s brunch and celebrity sitings. The homepage allows them to publish News and Events along with recipes etc… We created a little custom integration with Flickr for their photo album and used Simple Commerce to allow them to sell their pies online. In addition, specials can be posted daily in the menus section plus their is a guest feed back form.

MS Attorney General Site
The most interesting thing I think we did with this site was what you can’t see. Since there is endless stream of content being published to the site and the staff at the AGO’s office needs to be able to add new content including new static pages we made it possible for them to create static pages within the site just by publishing to a weblog and by selecting the correct category the pages style according to the section they belong to. We have just a few template groups and templates that control everything here.

Parenting On Track
We are just finishing up this site. You may run into some tests posts etc. . . just to warn you. Making Simple Commerce work in this case required an extensive amount of custom Paypal/EE work.

We have really loved developing with EE for it’s flexibility and ease. And when you need to go outside the box integrating custom solutions are always possible.

All nice sites, haven’t seen the Parenting site yet.
With a domain name like bubbys.com I figured they owned that one a while, nice transition from their old sites in the archive.

They don’t wish to show the prices for the pies on the store pages, without adding them to the cart, wondered about that?

We are probably going to give a little revamp to those pages this was initially how they wanted it but it has some shortcomings as is but of course waiting for the client to pull the trigger can be maddening.

What software did you use for the video section on your Parenting Site?

The video player itself was custom built with Flash 8 Pro, using Photoshop for most of the graphics. The videos themselves were provided as .flvs from a video production company. They are selected and played with an ExternalInterface callback using JavaScript.

I use swfObject to “display” the player, as I need to make sure at least Flash 8 player is available for the directory to function. Unfortunately it still won’t work in certain modern browsers, ie Opera 9.20 and earlier.

Currently the “directory” template is hardcoded, as there were a few changes along the way. This was the easiest way to do things for such a small number of videos, although pulling data from weblogs is easy enough. Using an xml file written directly from the database might be a better way to go for a larger/more dynamic directory/playlist.

I like the sites!  Great use of the tabs and flash on the gov site.  I have a question about linking to the main login page for EE on the parenting… is this even an issue?

I would have to half agree with that sentiment. Really depends how color-intensive and large your logo is, but typically .gif’s are safe bets. The pie site is great, but there are quite a bit of artifacts there and about. It’d look far greater with some quality adjustments on it.

Asides from that, I think they are 3 pretty solid starts to EE. I’m new as well, and am quite enjoying the community and EE itself.
