Site problems after upgrade from 1.6.2 to 1.6.3

Today we upgraded from 1.6.2 to 1.6.3 and have run into a HUGE problem.

The upgrade/install went fine.  However after clicking onto the site you are directed to the same default page that non-members are directed to or if you are member and not logged in.  Nothing I can see is wrong with the templates.  The access has not been changed so no problems there.  I am assuming something during the install didn’t go like it should.

Please help, any and all suggestions are welcome to get this site back online for my client and their members...I don’t even know how to revert back to the previous version...I just need to get the site back functioning.

Thanks!

I posted a new topic about the problems we are encountering after the upgrade: http://expressionengine.com/forums/viewthread/78983/

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...thanks

ETA- crud, I split this before I saw your edit.  Let me go merge these two.

It’s probably something minor.  But let’s break it out.  First- you ran the upgrade to go from EE 1.6.2-1.6.3- correct?  You went to the install- it said ‘You’re running 1.6.2- click to upgrade’.  Then you clicked and- did you get a success message?  And if so- how is the main site breaking?

Sorry for the whiplash with moving posts- got you in install now.  Let’s see what’s going on.

How are you handling the redirect for non-members?  Template access restriction?  Or....?

Also- if you put up a quick test template with just

{if logged_in}
logged in
{
/if}
{if logged_out}
logged out
{
/if}

Is the system seeing you as logged in on the frontend?

Yes, went through the entire updgrade process and everything went fine.

After the upgrade I went back to the site and removed the “offline” page and turned the site back online and when I click anywhere on the site it takes you to the same page.  It’s like it’s redirecting to the same page if your logged in or not logged in.  All members have private access to the site and non members are directed to an About page.  Well after the update everyone is redirected to the About and you cant get anywhere else on the site.  I can get to the CP…

It’s very odd and have no clue where to begin to fix the problem...Thank you for your help!

Yes, the system is seeing when I login on the front end, no problem there…

Actually, let me take that back...I can’t get to a login screen because I am redirected to the About page I mentioned.  However, when I login it to the CP and then I am seeing that my username is listed on the front end.

Does that make sense?

Hm- ok.  Normally if a member comes there and isn’t logged in, they’d need to access a login page.  Er- can you link me to the site?  If not publicly, pm me.

OK- the access restrictions made it a little tricky to pinpoint- but turned out to be fairly routine- needed to tweak the $qtype in index.php as per the kblog.

I’ll leave open for now just in case anything crops up- either with the base or the forum update.  But I think it looks good from here.  Let us know once you’ve had a chance to check it out and we’ll close out this thread- and get back to the youtube one!

Robin,
What’s funny is I didn’t do the forum upgrade (not sure that I will after today’s scare) but I just did a test and the videos are working with the EE upgrade!

So, as stressful as this afternoon was it was worth it.  Seriously you were a lifesaver on determing what the problems was, the fix was a breeze but would not have found it without some direction.  Thank you again!

The EE and forum upgrades are tied together, you really need to do it.

I went ahead and did the Forum upgrade and it went fine.  However, we’ve an issue come up over night and I am not sure when happened, if it was before or after the forum upgrade.  It was reported after the upgrade to me.

When you click a member name and “view all posts by this member” it is working on almost all accounts I have tested.  However, there is at least one member that it’s giving this message:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error
or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, root@domain.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

I noticed this particular member was the last member to start a new forum post before we did the site upgrade from 1.6.2 to 1.6.3.  Could that have caused something wacky?

It shouldn’t have.  That’s a server error- very odd if it would happen consistently for just a couple of members.  Would also make me suspect some htaccess issue, though IIRC, you aren’t using one.  Refresh my brain- do you have an htaccess file up?  And I believe I’ve still got your site info- so if you can post or pm me an example member or two, I’d like to see the problem in action.

Note- did see the pm, but I’ll keep most of the response here so the rest of the techs stay up on it.  Private bits I’ll take to pm.

But yep- let me know on htaccess and an example member or two, I’ll see what I can spot.

I’m going to bump this to the crew with some additional details.  I can’t spot why that one in particular should be jamming it up like that.  A quick look at the db tables didn’t throw any red flags about the member data itself.

One thing I’d normally suggest- can you flip it over to use a stock/default template.  Even adding back the switcher for a little bit so we could try it using a default would allow us to eliminate something in the template.  Though WHY it would happen with just the one member- that’s the bit that makes no sense.

Can you tell if they have any trouble posting now?

Thanks Robin,

Yes, I added the switcher back and still the same thing…

The member has had no problem at all posting since then, so I am totally confused.  The other thing I am going to try when his last post before the upgrade becomes stale (in a few days) I am going to delete the thread and see if that makes any difference.  I really don’t know what else to try.  It’s such an isolated problem with 1 member which is what is so odd…

It is very weird.  Talked to the crew- they were thinking htaccess or something in the custom theme.  Any chance you can leave the theme switcher in there for a bit so we can directly test in a couple of default themes?  Didn’t see it when I did a quick skim through.

10-4, I added the theme switcher back so you can see it now (down at the footer)...I tested it wioth all the themes and still the same error.  Thanks for any help you or anyone else discovers.

Heh- yep, tested it with two of the stock templates and I get the same 500 error as well.  Did go rename myself A-1 on my site just to test- no problems searching on it there.

At this point, I’d contact the host and just ask them if they have any ideas.  The one other thing I can think to try- put up the default EE template and test with it- looks like your default is the modified one.  But in truth, if it’s borking on the rest of the stock templates I don’t see it as being likely to work.

But I just can’t spot any reason on the EE side of things it would goof up like that.  Hopefully the host will help us narrow things down.

ETA- when you talk to them, ask if they have mod_security running- and if there’s any chance that could be a factor.

Make sense?

The host company has suggested that I re-upload all the files that were uploaded during the upgrade.  As you can imagine, I am very hesitant to do that since this is isoalted to one member (at least that we can tell)…

WaterfoulZone- I’m 99% sure we got this squared away in another post.  But I want to triple check before I close this on out in a ‘house cleaning sweep’.  Is all now well with the site?
