hee hee… boxer pups can be bundles of defiant energy and just plain wear a person out. At least, that was my experience for the first six months. Once they become trainable things really turned around and after one year my boxer is really the best dog I’ve ever had. Just took patience and endurance to get there.
I self-trained the boxer so that’s completely doable. Just takes 15-20 minutes a day using a decent, book system. I’m convinced just about any training method works, the important part is that you are establishing yourself as the master and focusing your dogs energy into something productive.
And really, I’m not trying to scare you or anything. They really are incredible dogs. Oh, don’t leave things you value in any way on the floor.
Like Mark said, good names come from the heart and have a story. My dog, a rot/terrier mix, is named Ike. We found him abandoned on the Eisenhower Expressway (Chicago). He was just a few months old and had been on the street for a while. To say the least he is very appreciative of his new home. He is 2 now and is a lot of fun. (avatar)
I love Boxers and that will be my next dog, so I really like all of the advise on this thread.
Other names of my past dogs, or my families dogs:
Noble - a Wolf hybrid I bought in Noblesville Indiana. Now a sled dog champ in Seward Alaska.
Willy - My Moms Lab, she loves Willie Nelson
Bolts - A shepherd we had as a kid, our family business made bolts for the farming industry.
Floyd - another Lab we owned, everybody likes Pink Floyd right!
7 years ago I found a very weak and dehydrated puppy on my property. I picked it up, got it some water and cooked up some white rice to get it some food it could likely keep down.
With in 2 days the puppy had recovered and I began looking for its owner. In addition to putting signs up in the neighborhood, running an ad in a local paper, I took the puppy out on walks hoping someone would spot it and come running over saying. . . “hey, that’s my dog”.
What actually happened is people came up to us and said, “What a handsome puppy”. Actually nearly everyone who saw the dog said something about how “handsome” he was.
After 2 weeks of looking for the owner, I decided to keep the dog and after hearing over 2 dozen people walk up to him and call him “handsome”. . . I figured that should be his name. I mean, how could all those people be wrong?
Wow, do they all have blue eyes like that? Or, is that a trick of the lighting?
I named my dog Bob. Reason: I used to love the Bob Newhart show (when he was a psychologist), and we used to play “Hi, Bob” (drinking game) in college while watching reruns of the show. So, I always wanted to come home and greet my dog at the door with a hearty “Hi, Bob!”

I could not agree more. My puppy (not a Boxer but a Mini Aussie) is 6 months old today and the past 4 months that we have had him has been exhausting. Fun too, but also, down right tiring. I didn’t realize how much work was involved in taking care of a puppy. Make sure you are prepared for the time and patience needed in raising a happy, healthy and well-adjusted dog.
um, how about ‘pepper’? before i was littlered media, i spent over 5 years as vp of technology at petfinder.com. i know about every pet name under the sun. sadie, lucy, lady, and daisy were always tops in the annual dog name poll. heed the fellow boxer parents advice—they need some training to be good members in the furry four-legged community… what a little sweetheart. congratulations!
The favourite at the moment is Georgie (or George for short, brilliantly). But the favourite changes often ... and we get her on Friday so it’s almost decision time!
The decision will be easy as soon as you are face to face. I’m sure that you will just instinctively know. That’s what I’ve always believed in with animals. You just know what they want their names to be!
Well I have two cats and they definitely get everything their way like all cats so I’m pretty sure we were forced into choosing their names!!
