Oh don’t I wish it were the EE showcase gallery, I’m not sure how many sites get added there. Try submitting your site in the menu on the right of the Showcase pages. Considering the sites that come through the forum category here, many people just may not submit their sites to the EE showcase.
The gallery I was referring to is just a blog post a week on mostInspired.com (since you asked), a gallery of top 10 picks, more as a journal than anything.
That was the right validator, it’s a right click away for me in FF.

Yup. They actually get added to the HTML as normal linked images, and then Javascript grabs the link URLs and image SRCs, replaces them with the Flash object, and feeds those URLs and SRCs to it as FlashVars.

Ahh, I tried figuring something like that in my head but the spotlight’s design varies so I wasn’t sure how it could be approached. It’s great seeing it in action.

If you like that, you should check out the Navigant Locations Map, which is also driven by EE (through an XML template, in this case).

Wow that’s great. I’ve done some stuff combining KML (GIS data was all funky, had to manually edit everything by hand), MooTools and the Google Maps API, but it was all very hackish to get it up and running. How does this map work, i.e. the points on the map and such? Is there actual geographic precision.. or..? How was the design of the map itself done? I haven’t touched Yahoo Maps at all. I’m really curious.

Prepare for a bit of a disappointment! I’ve just got the whole map drawn out as a vector graphic, and the dot locations and “viewport” coordinates/scales are also predefined. A location will only show up if both its dot exists and its location info exists in the CMS. If they want to add a new location to a preexisting dot, no extra action is required on our part (Atlanta has three locations attached to it, for example). But if they’re adding a new location in a new city, we do have to go in and add a new dot.

Haha not disappointed, can always appreciate good craftsmanship. Though I would’ve been dribbling if there was some kind of super skinning done for a Yahoo Maps in Flash. Any pointers how that map was made? Might come in handy.

Well, this is the second time I’ve done a map like this (previously for Basic Chemical Solutions). The main thing I took from the first one is that updatability is key. It’s a pain in the butt to go in and make changes to a Flash file you haven’t worked on in two years!
So for this one, the only things that I need to update from Flash are the viewport positions and dot positions (I couldn’t justify spending the time to make that dynamic). Both of those things are as simple as dragging things around in a movieclip (see attachment). All the actual information is CMS-based. And things like the flight paths and the info box positions/tip placements are all dynamically generated based on all other variables.
So the world map (the vector graphic) itself was made by hand? Must’ve took a long time!
It helps yeah. Got me thinking a number of things, would be interesting to play around with some possibilities via yahoo or google maps if the time for it ever comes up. Makes me wish one of my current Google Map projects was done via a cms of any sort (with a strong preference to EE these days hehe).
Quick announcement: We just finished localizing the site into 3 new languages: German, French, and Spanish. You can switch languages using the drop down at the top-right. There are a few nooks and crannies that haven’t been localized yet, but I’d say it’s 95% done. This is the first time Design Reactor has localized a big site like this, and we’re very happy with how it all came together.
Oh wow, I really love this site. The illustration is absolutely perfect and the design is very different and memorable. This is what I love so much about EE. You can’t just look at a site and say “This was made in EE”.
Don’t know if it’s just me or not but there seems to be something up with your SIFR technique at the moment. There is all kinds of text all over the page, I think in place of your main page title?
I did notice this when the site very first went live but it seemed to go away within a day or two. Not sure if it is just me though but thought I would mention it.
