One thing I hope you have considered for 2 is the way upgrades take place.

I’ll echo that sentiment smile An easier upgrade method would be much appreciated so I don’t have to reinstall plugins and modules every time there’s a point update.

I’m really looking forward to taking the new CP for a spin, I always felt that it could be improved upon and apparently steps are underway to do so. I’m not too keen on the color scheme I’ve seen, but if it’s skinnable then huray! I’m sure Veerle is doing a great job.

CI integration, what can I say smile This rocks!

EE 2.0 looks exciting. :D I’m not too keen on the overall look, but only because it kinda reminds me of WP :/ but I do like that it’s theme-able. I’m ready for it.

I guess I’m glad that i’m semi-familiar with CI, since that will help with any plugins/modules I’ll have to update for 2.0.

What I was wondering about (and this is probably not the right place to ask this) : where will there be an announcement for developers to get their hands on a beta build of ee 2.0 to update their plugins/modules?

I’d say the developer mailing list would make sense, but I haven’t heard from that in so long..it makes me wonder if it still exists. Or do I have to sign up for something again?

Anyways, keep up the awesome work, I’m ready to update any plugins and modules if necessary. I totally wish I was at SXSW to see everything!

I heard it was coming out Wednesday. Just what I heard.  tongue wink

Seriously though, does my annual subscription cover the cost of this? I ask for two reasons:

1. I need to start saving now if it doesn’t
2. I’m not paying for the subscription reminder I just got in email if it doesn’t.

Pretty sure I know the answer, but be nice to hear.

I also wonder about migrating my current sites. I am sure it will be pretty easy...or am I being naive?

I would like to know the same thing if possible.  I have an expired personal license and was wondering whether I should wait until 2.0 to renew or renew now.

Though I don’t remember where at the moment, I seem to remember Leslie commenting that they have not decided on pricing yet.  We may have to wait until closer to launch to find out about the cost of upgrading.

The new EE looks fantastic.

We use EE for our school, and having a more modular / shinier control panel is a great thing.

Thank you very much EE team!

Very excited about the new version. It looks clean and should have a friendlier feel for clients. Well done!

And I am hoping that’s for new customers. Otherwise, I really don’t see the point of paying for the Download Accounts Renewals.

From the email I got the other day:

Our records indicate that your ExpressionEngine download account will expire in 30 days. Although you can continue using ExpressionEngine to run your site, in order to continue being able to download new versions and updates you must renew your subscription by April 7, 2008.  The cost of renewal is $19.95 for one year.

Emphasis is mine.

From the renewal page:

After one year, if you want to continue accessing the download area for continued updates, you can purchase a yearly renewal.

So there is just mentions updates. If I only have access to 1.6 updates, and updates for 1.6 amy or may not continue (and for sure will be taking a back seat to 2.0, then why should I pay for access to updates for a product I probably won’t be using? My guess is regardless I will be upgrading, but would like a ruling on whether renewal covers 2.0.

And yes, I am being a bit more proactive than just posting here wondering what the answer is. I have an email into sales asking this very question. I will report back here with the answer if no one posts it beforre me.

I would be really surprised if 2.0 wasn’t an upgrade cost. I don’t know anything, but that would shock me considering they’re calling it an upgrade and not a migration.

I got my reply from sales. I am sure there would be no objection to me posting it here:

Hi Christopher,

This hasn’t been decided yet. Sorry about the inconvenience. We have a long history of being fair to the community. I can’t promise it will cover the upgrade to 2.0 but I can promise that whatever is decided will be fair.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
Leslie, EllisLab

Which leaves me up in the air as to whether or not I renew. I probably will, since Leslie is right. Every since pmachine the upgrades costs have been reasonable. Even if there has been some grumping.

This is the exact same thing I was a little concerned about but will wait to hear what the EE admin have to say on this one. I was just concerned that if you went ahead and bought the version that is out now and say in a week 2.0 comes out then according to the statement where they say you have to pay for a year to download new versions and updates then I would see this as meaning you can download 2.0 free of charge as it is in fact a new version.

Not sure if that text will change as 2.0 comes out though. I guess we will have to wait and see. Hopefully one of the EE admin will let us know closer to the time that they are going to release it (2.0) because if you did purchase 1.6.whatever and then 2.0 came out a few days later and your client saw it and wanted it and knew because you have always done updates for free or at little cost for them then if you started bunging on loads of dosh just to cover the new price then that would seem a little unfair.

Will have to see what they say on this though.

Best wishes,

Mark

I think it is reasonable to expect that, even if there is some cost to upgrade, your renewal fee will entitle you to a discount or rebate of some sort.  They are a good company and I feel certain that they will reward your loyalty.

Just finished listening to the CMS roundup panel at SXSW. The guy who created Mr. T and me site (Essel) represented EE. ExpressionEngine came off looking very good - especially in the Q and A when Essel saying “ExpressionEngine can do that out of the box!” after the Drupal guy finished his longer explanation about the intricacies or drawbacks to doing certain things.

After the 2.0 preview, meeting the EE people, and now this panel - I’m totally confident that EE is the way to go for the projects in front of me. Now I just need to get better at the design side of the equation.

One question I forgot to ask was about the possible integration of an easier coding interface. I followed the lead of some on these forums and got TextMate and Transmit, and it would be great if there was something like Textmate built in to EE 2.0. Is this in the works, or even on the list of changes?

In case anyone has missed it (I know I did), the podcast of the EE2 preview is available from the SXSW podcast page now.

I’m downloading it for listening to later.

Later this week once we’re all home we will be unveiling an area of our site that will give people a lot more info, including a video screencast and answers to many of the questions people have been asking.

A technology preview sounds awesome!

deepsurface One of my all-time favorite features of EE is the “Save Templates as Files” feature that allow you to push the templates to plain-text files within any folder on your server. You can edit them as needed, just as if you were working on real php/html/css/js files on a server! It is an absolutely stunning feature that is easy to gloss over without real impact on its significance.

IOW, you can haz all teh TextMate ur can handelz.
