Hmm,

I could be wrong but I think that the SXSW you are referring to is a different one to which the forums here are referring to. As I said before though I could be wrong.

Best wishes,

Mark

Mark, please give a bit more thought before replying in the forums as replying without information derails threads.  SXSW is a large festival that includes interactive media (including the web), music and film.

Hi Paul,

I apologise. I had seen a web-site the other day with the exact same initials but this one wasn’t related in any way to the SXSW that these forums are talking about. I really do apologise for this. I will try to find the URL that I found which is why I got confused but actually even if I do find the link I suppose it doesn’t really matter as I will own up and apologise for my mistake.

It was not my intention to cause trouble in any way and for that I apologise both to yourself and also to you, Stew.

Being a muso myself I would never want to upset a fellow muso or human being for that matter. I will definitely think more carefully next time before posting.

Once again I apologise for this and hope that I don’t get a black star against my name or anything? grin

Best wishes,

Mark

Hey everything is cool,
I am coming over as a part of a band but I have interests, professionally and otherwise in all aspects of the festival. I also would like to get a heads up on Austin, No trouble at my end.

thanks

Hi Stew,

Thanks and once again sorry for any confusion. Hope you have a great time over there. What instrument do you play then?

Best wishes,

Mark

Stew everyone talks about the barbecue in Austin but I found there to be no time to get to it!  Out of curiosity, how did you find us?

Hi Mark

I play guitar and pedal steel in this band, and no worries.

Oh, awesome, I didn’t get from your MySpace page (I admit to frankly despising MySpace so didn’t look very long) to see the connection to Robot Club.  So...if I get you an ExpressionEngine license for a proper dynamic website can I get a sneak peek at Weather Underground or whatever it’s going to be called now? ;-D

Impressive, btw - I’m always looking for new music to code to.  Hope to see you at the Interactive portion of the festival

We keep the band separate from Robot Club, although our singer is working with us on some Massive stuff, I would get into huge trouble for any sneaky peaks of the new album.
There are a lot of politics surrounding MA, both members of the group work separately and we work with Daddy G. But I can say that we have done tracks with Damon Albarn and Hope Sandoval, but who knows what will end up on the album. Thats for them to sort out.

cheers

Hmm I wonder what I can do to squeeze some freebies out of you all?

I fly helicopters, work in radio advertising (have made over 20,000 adverts in under 8 years), worked as a music technician at a music college teaching everything about music hardware and software. Have used every audio software ever available on Macs and Atari, play Piano, Clarinet, Keyboards, Guitar, Penny Whistle & Recorder. Have recorded many bands, set up PA systems, create art to a high level using Photoshop, create jingles, telephone on hold messages, did all the music for Drayton Manor Park here in the UK and so on and so forth.

Anything there worth an EE2.0 License when it appears? grin wink grin

Best wishes,

Mark

Yeah, that album has been highly anticipated, so I’m sure everything is tightly under wraps.

The best tip I think I have for someone from Bristol is that Austin can get hot even in early March.  Bring clothing appropriate for what you’d wear in late July.  A humid 80 degrees (26.7C) is not uncommon.

As I’ve said in a variety of different threads here, if you’d like any information about Austin or SXSW, let me know. PM me if you’d like.

The music festival and the interactive festival (and the film festival—and the game festival) are fairly independent of each other, even though they have the same name, and happen at relatively the same time in March. These are all offspring of the original music festival, which was started by a tiny group of guys associated with The Austin Chronicle, our local alternative newsweekly. The Interactive Festival is about 15 years old now—I was part of the first one, and believe it or not, we thought then that the future was CD-ROMs! The new game festival just started last year, so this is a plastic and evolving set of events—do we call them events? It’s just people getting together over things that interest them.

One of the reasons this is held in the particular segment of March that it is—all the different parts of the festival—is that it’s spring break for the University of Texas at Austin, which is the largest university in the United States: 52,000 students. That used to be over 10% of the population of Austin, but Austin has grown considerably over the years so that proportion is no longer true; but the student population is still immense—and, moreover, a lot of UT graduates stay in Austin and start tech/media/movie companies. Austin was just rated by MovieMaker magazine as the “number 1” place to live and make movies in the U.S., higher than Hollywood, so you get the picture: Austin is growing faster than most other metro areas in the U.S., and most of the new jobs are in media/digital/movies/interactive, etc. The two sources of new people are grads from the University of Texas and people moving here from other places. (In my local neighborhood, the community association is dominated by a majority of people who have lived in Austin for less than 5 years; a popular bumper sticker says “Welcome to Austin: Now Go Home!") I’ve lost count of how many people I’ve met here at a digital media conference of some sort who decided to move here once they got a taste of the Austin lifestyle.

This is just to give you all some context, and perhaps to give some flavor to people who can’t make it to SXSW. When I and some friends organized the first SXSW Interactive Festival, we had maybe 300 people in a single room with about 30 computers, most of them showing CD-ROMs. Now SXSW Interactive is the largest digital media conference in the world. Just goes to show you (like pMachine, and now Ellis Labs) that “from small things, baby, big things one day come” (Bruce Springsteen). . . . grin

-- Gary

P.S.—Also, as I’ve noted, I won’t be at THIS YEAR’s SXSW—first one I’ve missed in a while—because I will be teaching digital media at the University of Lisbon and the University of Porto in Portugal, and telling the Portuguese about EE. I don’t expect to have a bad time in Portugal, but I’ll miss seeing you guys at SXSW! Sorry I can’t be there. . . .

Thanks loads for that, I’ll remember to try not to impress anyone with my usb key. Well it just keeps sounding better and better.
By the way, Lisbon is an amazing town if you have never been before.
thanks Gary

Yeah, I’ve never been before, and people keep telling me Lisbon is a wonderful place, so I’m getting really excited about going.

Amazing sea food, and cool trams, not a huge amount in the way of music, but the thing is to go off the beaten track for restaurants, They get much cheaper and food gets better. Make sure you ask if you’re not sure what something on the menu is because the Portuguese like to put a lot of offal in there food, they are also quite fond of horse, which I dont have a problem with but you might not want to eat old ned.
If you have time check out “Olivier” on Rua do teixeira, Its a bit pricy but the food is amazing.
Its might not be as hot as Austin but it will be t-shirt weather.

cheers
