It strikes me as odd that I have to hand write absolute paths into the Category Image URL when a file upload feature would be much better!

Ditto.

Could Mark’s file upload module be hacked to do this?

I’m needing this too. It is very perplexing to me that this doesn’t exist. Is the content editor supposed to FTP the image to the server and then figure out what the URL is? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a CMS?

No, what defeats the purpose of the CMS is one having to set up an upload directory with a correct path and make sure all the permissions are correct on the server.  This is why we put the Upload Directory stuff in one place.  So, what this feature request really should be is the ability to upload by specifying an Upload Directory for category image URLs.

I 6th this. Though, technically, couldn’t you make a global variable for the starting image URL (i.e., domain.tld/images/category_images/) to cut down on the typing?
