I’m trying to put up some ideas to construct the test website structure before my demo expires, but unfortunately Im not able to understand the category groupings, category structure and weblogs linkin to them!

I read the manual and tried to mess around with the options and entering test data but nothing showed up….  *seems I have to go back to school*
What I tied is the following:-
a) Created a category Group “Products”
b) Created sub category for Products “Engines”
c) Created sub category for Products “Wheels”
d) Created sub category for Products “Lights”
e) Created sub category for Engines “LT”
f) Created sub category for Engines “V6” …. And so on!
g) Create a weblog for each of them of them and entered some dummy data

But the categories I created are not visible on the first(Home Page), and plus how can I link the weblogs I created to their appropriate category so if someone will click them it will display that page for them from home page?  In help file I was not able to find how I could link the URL to those categories. If someone knows about good material which will help me makin my basic concept strong on how to create website using ee it would be great.

One more thing which I was not able to resolve was the templates, if I could have an idea of how I could use it with the above structure and creating my own once.

Well I will be very thankful if the ee guru’s out there could help me out and give me some tips on how to use it for my website and to test it before the trial version expires!

Thanks in advance!

Oh woah, ok, you’ve got things a little bit backward here. =)

When you have a weblog, you have a category group (if you want categories).  In that category group you make your categories and hierarchy.  Then in the weblog management page you edit groups and associate the proper category group with the weblog.

Then the categories will show up with each post, and you can list the categories on the main page.

You definitely do not need nor want a weblog for each categoy. =)  A weblog should be if you need a different set of categories or bunches of other reasons included here: Knowledge blog - Should I use categories or multiple weblogs?.

I’m not sure what you mean by “resolve the templates” - do you mean load them? Let’s sort out what you’re doing first then think about that. =)

Wow indeed. I’m with Lisa on this one, you’ll probably only need one weblog and just make your subcategories under that. You can either modify the default category group or use the new one you created and just assign it to the base weblog.

Keep in mind that while you can assign a single category group to multiple weblogs you can’t do the reverse and assign multiple groups to a single weblog. Whatever category group you assign to a blog has to hold all your categories (and subcategories) that you want to use in that blog.

Though there is a way to make it look otherwise…
