I can’t find an option to disable these two references. Can it be done?

I would at least like to edit the glossary.

There’s not a great way I can spot to eliminate the smiley link, but I’ll do some more double checking to be sure.

As to the glossary- ftp in and go to system/lib/glossary.php- that’s where EE gets the arrays that populate the glossary.  Keep a clean copy of that- then edit it as needed.  Untested, but I believe it will do the trick.

If you hide the formatting menu for the custom field, spelling, glossary, smileys, and the formatting drop-down will all be hidden.  To selectively disable specific items would require an extension that would take over rendering of the publish page.  And of course, there is also always the option of using a stand alone entry form, which you have full control over the display of, and bypassing the control panel altogether.

Textdriven - I have written an extension that will basically remove the link that says “Smileys” under each text area. See this thread.

The problem? I can’t get the dumb regular expression to work correctly. If I can get a little help escaping some quotes and removing whatever field id happens to be there and whatnot, I can set this extension loose. You can see a sample pic of the output on that thread.

I ended up writing an extension that I think will at least hide the “Smileys” link(s) on the Publish screen: Hide Smileys Link in Control Panel. I almost tore my hair out messing with regular expressions, so this might be ugly under the hood, but it’s working for me.

If you have any problems with it, leave a note in that thread!

So what is the point in having a “Display Smileys” option in the system preferences if it doesn’t disable them?
What does it disable?

Thanks to mdesign for the extension, but I would rather not have lots of mods to the standard default installation.

orienteer, that option determines whether or not text smileys are converted to graphical smileys.  OT: love your screen name and avatar!

I have a client that doesn’t want to be able to see the Formatting drop-down or Smileys.  I got the Smileys extension from mdesign, but still need to figure something out for hiding the Formatting dropdown.

Anybody have any ideas on that?  Thanks

Sure, goalquest, just go into Admin ›  Weblog Administration ›  Field Groups ›  Custom Fields, and click on the custom field in question, and under the formatting type, click the radio button “Hide Formatting Menu”.

I’m sorry, to clarify: I want to keep the Spell Check and Glossary links - but remove the Smiley and Formatting dropdown. (Not the entire formatting menu).

goalquest, you’d need to modify the existing extension to remove the other items. Ryan might be able to help you with that task.

@goalquest: I’d take a look at this right now, but I’m at a crunch time with too many projects at once at the moment. I"ll add it to the to-do list. I’d love it if the EE team would put a class on those links and the formatting dropdown - it would make removing them a la carte SO much easier. I have a second version of this in the works where you can remove any or all the links - but I think I’ll add the formatting menu in there as an option too. Would any Regular Expression masters care to help me out with the regular expression needed to help get this plugin to the next level?
