ExpressionEngine comes with an Emoticon Module and the default setups already have it integrated.  The “Publish” screen in the Control Panel has an “emoticons” link for you to insert smilies.  Similarly, the “comments” Template also has the same sort of link.

Strongbad, I mean, Mr. Curtis is correct.  The smilies link is a little tricky to spot at first, especially in the control panel.  I know I didn’t spot it right away.  It’s just above the formatting buttons, which are what your eye goes to first.

Quoting Chris Curtis :

The “Publish” screen in the Control Panel has an “emoticons” link

Huh ? I don’t have that link, where should it be and where do I activate it ?
Smilies are working properly in comments, with full URL set in the preferences.

aaahhh it’s ok, I deleted all the HTML buttons (so the whole toolbar was gone) in the past because I thought they generated invalid XHTML Strict code, do they ?

They do but you can modify what they output - so change < b > to < strong > etc. =)
