Just a quick note to let people know that we’ve implemented the Recently Updated Sites in the Showcase section. This has been much requested since the redesign and we’re happy to bring it back.

I absolutely hate Snap.  I haven’t even looked at the section yet, and I can already say, get rid of it.  Basically, if I want to see what a site looks like, I’ll visit it; I don’t want random speech bubbles popping up when I merely hover over an image.  Snap.com is an abhorration of the Internet that nobody should ever use, IMO.

lol… Well Arden, seeing as how you’ve not actually seen the implementation and judged it based on this specific situation, I’m going to request that you do so and then post your opinion. All of the things Performancing says about using Snap do not apply to the implementation on the Updated Sites.

1. Accidental triggers: Not here. Its on an Icon only and we make clear what the icon is for.

2. Click stalling: The trigger is the icon, not the link, so there is no stall on the actual link.

3. I trust you: This point is just a rant by the guy applying his subjective feelings toward all possible uses and I find it silly. The point of a Showcase is to a see a site. If you have 50 sites to go through, I think most people would want to preview before going and returning or opening 50 tabs or whatever.

I generally abhor Snap and snap-like services (including extensions in Firefox that do the same thing) - but I honestly think that the usage in the showcase is fantastic.  You have to pretty much purposefully hover over the icon to get the preview, and it definitely makes it easy to browse the showcase.

I’m, personally, a fan of keeping it.

That article is not even up to date with the method of Snap implementation Les has chosen to use on the Showcase (which he has responded to point-by-point).  My request, please, is that if you’re going to voice such a strongly worded opinion, be informed first.

I thought it was quite a nice feature and it helped me to select the pages I wanted to view in full smile

Keep it going guys!

I have to agree that if it were activated on the link itself then I would say no. Would it not be a better idea to have a text link that said ‘Preview site’ or something might be a bit more intuitive?

I think the icon is good, too many preview sites really would make it harder to scan the titles.  Too much text, imho.

A few thoughts on this issue:

- I don’t mind the previews. It’s an interesting way to see what’s next, without navigating there. While I agree with some of the comments (on it being a bad choice if used everywhere), in this context (rapidly skimming a bunch of sites) it’s useful.

- I wonder if there’s a way to get smallish thumbnails of all the sites, and have those sitting next to the links (say, 64px square, or so). That might mean making the list shorter, but that would be good here, I think. Or, have the top 20 most recent have a thumb. Skimming that visually would be nicer, and shouldn’t make load times huge (depending on how they’re generated).

- It’d be nice to see a tighter crop on the previews, to get a feel for the layout - not sure if this is possible through Snap.

- I don’t love the chrome in the Snap previews; that’s one reason I haven’t done it on any of my sites. I don’t like the presence of their branding in every preview. If a client wanted this feature, I’d investigate a paid option so I wouldn’t have to show the Snap logo.

- Also: consider doing two columns. There’s a lot of wasted white space here.

“What icon?” I kept thinking, until I revisited the site with Firefox: Opera (9.20.8767 on XP Pro) doesn’t show me any icons. Not sure it’s a great loss, just mentioning.

It was working in 9.10, so I updated to the preview, Version 9.20 Beta Build 3659, and the icons and rollovers still work ok.  Are you blocking anything in your security or privacy settings that might affect it, or have any third party add-ons? As an aside, if you have time, Ingmar, I’d really like if you could email me to explain why you continue to use Opera as your primary browser.  I’ve tried it dozens of times and after having nothing but problems, I go back to avoiding it.  From your posts here, you have problems with it as well, so I must be missing the major benefit that cause people to latch onto it so loyally.

I see. Well, I don’t, really, so I’ll try that build.

No. And it works with FF, so it’s not some Personal Firewall thing, or something like that.

Sure. PM or The Lounge, your call.

I think I would get more out of it if we were conversing directly, freely, and without any distraction of a browser war, so I’ll email you here in a bit, thanks.

PArdon me if this is way off the SNAP discussion raging here, but where I come from, the “Recent List” ping doesn’t work—or am I plain stupid?

I get this result:

The following XML-RPC pings were not accepted:
ExpressionEngine Recent List - Unknown method

I did ping from the Edit tab, not the Publish tab…

Erik, did you follow the instructions for setting up the ping to ExpressionEngine?  And what do you mean by “I did ping from the Edit tab, not the Publish tab…”?  Do you have an extension installed that allows you to send pings from somewhere other than the publish form?

Hi Leslie,

I did follow those instructions to the letter. I don’t have an extension to do what you say. I opened the article from the Edit tab and then checked EE in the Pings tab of the editing form—I called it this to make a difference between the Publish tab (first time you enter content). That’s all.

I have a dozen or so pings that return errors (HTTP 1.1 / 405, 404, 302—servers not retunring OK, etc.). EE is now one of them.

Since you are experiencing problems with pinging other sites in addition to ExpressionEngine, I’d like to ask you please to open a new support topic in the Tech Support forum so one of our TSS’s can provide proper assistance for you.
