I have always had a concern about sending people to the member pages because it looks so different from the rest of my site.  I’ve never tried to tinker with the CSS of the member pages.

+1 on this request.

Memberships should be an autonomous module, that all other modules (weblog, site, forum) can use at will.

Surprised I hadn’t already added my vote to this thread since I have to almost every other one concerning Membership templates.
So, here’s my vote/request…Yes!

You got my vote!
Especially the feature of having members belong to multiple member groups.

Cheers. smile

The function and templates should integrate with the regular EE templates.  I should be able to work on membership templates in the same way that I edit my website templates.  I shouldn’t have to maintain separate CSS pages, and I shouldn’t have to recreate my main website templates if I want my membership pages to have a similar look and feel as the rest of the site.

Mega-bumpage for this feature in 2.0.

Ah - wonderful! I am not alone on this. I’ve just hit the membership module on a major project, and having been pleasantly surprised with EE functionality until now, it’s suddenly like I’m using a different (and lesser) CMS.

An improvement here is badly needed guys. If I had known about the way that the current membership module has been integrated (or not) into EE before purchasing, it would probably have made me look elsewhere.

The lack of template integration with the rest of EE is the main issue here for me, with the unecessary duplication of membership related templates in the forum module a close second.

Consider this a vote for integrated member templates.  I’m just now realizing that my membership page footer is out of date because it’s not an embed…  It’s my own oversight, but still…

Another vote from me!  Although I’ll admit I’ve not used the member module much, but the little time I have spent looking at it has just blown my mind.

I seem to be coming into this discussion pretty late, but I have to say that the way the membership system works is one of the major sticking points I run into when pitching ExpressionEngine to existing organizations that could otherwise benefit from all the great things EE has to offer. It’s always hard to get them to buy into it simply because the membership system doesn’t do what they need it to do. Usually, the features they require run along the following lines (for the sake of brevity, I’ll list only the things EE doesn’t already cover in one way or another):

* Need to be able to set memberships to expire after a fixed period of time.

* Upon expiration, the member in question should be automatically downgraded to a designated group.

* Need to be able to send notifications by e-mail to members whose memberships will expire soon to remind them to renew.

* Need to be able to store admin-definable, member-updateable information that is not part of the public profile (for things like addresses, telephone numbers, etc.)

* Need to be able to export membership information into CSV or other format whenever needed.

If EE could do these things, it would be a much better fit for organizations that already have a membership system of one sort or another. At this point, though, EE sort of requires users to conform to its conception of membership, rather than adapting to the user’s needs—as it does in just about every other area I can think of.

This is an unfortunate shortcoming in an otherwise superb product. Like the others who have written before me, I too hope to see EE’s membership management become more flexible.

Call me simple, but that would actually be not all that hard to implement, I think. I mean, yes, I agree it should ship with EE as standard functionality, but all that would be required, really, would be a few SQL queries to see how lang somebody’s been a member, and act on that. I suppose it could be done with an extension, perhaps a plugin.

* Need to be able to store admin-definable, member-updateable information that is not part of the public profile (for things like addresses, telephone numbers, etc.)

Are you sure that can’t be done? I mean, why not just define a profile field, and just not display it anywhere for non-admins?

* Need to be able to export membership information into CSV or other format whenever needed.

That’s easy, just build a template to do this. Might need to make us of the query module, but is certaily doable.

Like the others who have written before me, I too hope to see EE’s membership management become more flexible.

I agree. I have just no idea how hard it is, though (quite, I suppose), so we might not see anything like this before 2.0 comes out. In the meantime, a few workarounds might be needed.
