I am an amateur web designer sort of.  I construct web sites for the odd friend (at no charge) & host (at no charge) a few sites for them.  I am disabled and this all is kind of a hobby for me.  So please be patient wink

The topics ...

“Simple Commerce and Personal License ”  http://expressionengine.com/forums/viewthread/38052/

and

“Can I give members their own mini-site ? ”  http://expressionengine.com/forums/viewthread/37502/

... have really helped to answer a few of my questions (I think).  Thank you posters wink

Unfortunately ... I have a cognitive dysfunction so I am not certain I always understand correctly the things I think I understand.  Or maybe its better explained by saying “I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer these days”.  If you know what I mean. wink

So ... just to confirm ... #1 friend has a small business (that does support him) & wants to advertise it on the net and also now sell his products via the web as well.

So #1 friend would require a Commercial License.

#2 friend is in charge of developing & getting a web presence set up for a registered non-profit business association (has a non-profit number etc).  Members would pay annual dues ... but no donations or anything are taken.

So ... #2 friend would require a Personal License???

I don’t know if either of them will choose to go the “ExpressionEngine” route ... but I am impressed enough with what I have seen so far that I am going to strongly encourage them to.  For both ... using the product would certainly make my “job” easier.  #1 wants to set up on online store & take payments.  #2 want to have members register online and pay annual dues ... as well as each full member having the ability to create a page or two web site to promote their business and link to their own websites etc.  (a glorified yellow pages ad)  And EE certainly looks like it would fill both their needs.

IF I can talk one more friend into buying EE ... is there a way, since each person would be registering for & paying for their own copy ... that I/they could benefit from the discounts mentioned in another post I read???  Or is that only possible if I were to buy & pay for them and then transfer registration afterwards?

Thanks for your assistance & consideration.  Its appreciated ... along with your patience
Peter

Morning, pmhoran.

I dropped Les a note on this thread- he’s the ‘official’ word on licensing issues and the best one to answer this one.  He’ll get back on it shortly.

Hope you can get your friends to go with EE- you’re right to think that it will make your life easier!

You’ve got it exactly right.

#2 friend is in charge of developing & getting a web presence set up for a registered non-profit business association (has a non-profit number etc).  Members would pay annual dues ... but no donations or anything are taken.

Yes, non-profits are welcome to the Personal license.

If you aren’t planning on purchasing the license on the client’s behalf the best way to get credit for the purchase is to have them use your Affiliate link when they purchase. Please see the Affiliates section for details.

Thanks Robin ...

And ... Thank you Leslie.  Nice to know my brain still can function from time to time hehehehe wink

The affiliate program sounds like it would fulfil my idea of profiting a bit from the sales wink

Another couple questions though.

The W9 form ... since I live in Canada ... is there still a need for me to submit one????

Does a site have to be using EE in order to place an affiliate banner/link on it??  I own a few websites ... but currently, none are using EE.

Thanks again
Peter

Yes. The W9 is a fancy way of saying “I don’t owe the US government any money so its okay to pay me”. So we need it on file in order to send you any money you earn from the affiliate program. This is something we’re required to do since we’re a business operating in the United States.

You can use your affiliate banner/link on any site you wish, regardless if its EE or not.
