Hi!
I know I’m a bit late but I would like to send a big “thank you” for the EE Core version.

As a web developer, several times EE seemed the best option to satisfy a client’s needs but I could not take that decision without solid knowledge about the script and a testing place to abuse in any ways possible.

EE Core just made that possible. I hope it means some business your way too!

Let me take that back and say that after struggling with the themes/templates system for 2h, I’m ready to place it right next to return of the Antichrist =)
I’m working the web professionally for the last 10 years and I *never* seen anything like it. Even vBulletin skin/template system is graspable after a short walk through, but this is amazing! I’m sure all this will pay off in the end but for now I’m looking for the nearest bridge on the map wink

Amazing, isn’t it? Seriously, the EE templateing system is one of the most straight forward ones I’ve seen in a long time. You’ll get the hang of it soon.

Hey, are you the same rbl that was doing some interesting stuff with coppermine way back when? *wracks brain* you had a really neat gallery iirc. Anyway welcome aboard! Don’t worry, once you get your head around how templates and how everying is glued together, you can do pretty much whatever you want smile

How do you remember that? Wow! I thought my MIB had zapped everyone on the planet =)
The coppermine gallery is still online, semi-abandoned and sad… Check it out http://lomoblog.com

As for the template system, I’m finally starting to make some sense of it and let me tell you, EE is the total opposite of most stuff I’ve ever worked. My inability to grasp was due to my total disbelief that anyone would go that way.
While in most systems the active template is some var handled under the hood, surfacing rarely at the end of the URL when the user is changing the template/skin, in EE it’s not only a part of the url but users are also encouraged to use it semantically!! Semantically!!! Why?! Really! I can’t picture any valid reason why the template group name and inclusive templates should perform the job of the blog and category names, which by their turn, are almost not used or thrown about like C2, C3, ect!

Btw, my excessive exclamation marks mean total shock, not anger =)

I’ve read this page a thousand times because I thought it was a prank =) This should be the first page shown to anyone coming from other CMS/Blogware:
http://expressionengine.com/knowledge_base/article/how_do_urls_in_ee_work/

I’m also realizing that the kind of site I usually do on Textpattern with one or two templates, is going to need a huge number of template groups, at least one for every weblog/section I had, which will make updates a royal pain in the derriere.

I can’t deny that the feature pack is massive, some of them make EE truly unique and that in theory one can make any kind of site out of it. But I still can’t believe I was hacking the code for clean URLs (without index.php and template group names) even before I tried any of those killer features.

Thanks again for the core version pMachine!
I would be spastic to find it out about the URLs after purchasing a license and pretty worse after realizing that there is no other option than that! =|

Which leads me to another point, any sales people in the room? Sent a couple of emails 12h ago about a failed license purchase and still no answer!

Heh! Yeah that was the one - I was so suprised to see a coppermine site that didn’t scream coppermine! by its design (man customising CPG’s look is painful), and I was impressed with your square thumbnails :)

As for EE templates & url structure, relax :) You may need to create a lot of template groups & templates, but you can abstract everything to just a handful of files with EE code and reuse through the rest of the templates. Check out my tutorial here for some examples. EE’s url structure has worked well for me!

Removing the index.php files is just a matter of making a change in the CP, dropping this in a .htaccess file, and tidying up the pagination links. Its a lot simpler than it looks, and there’s no need to hack the code!
