I’m trying to del.icio.us tag some webservices I use. Stuff like clockwork, tadalist, basically applications that run on the web.

What are these called? I need something more specific than ‘software’ but ‘webservices’ seems too broad.

Anyone wanna play the semantics game?

fifteen,

If your trying to nail this down (as I am) check out some of these INCREDIBLE resources below.  I would call them social bookmarking (Del.icio.us, furl), social newsmarking (digg.com, commontimes.com), social network engines (friendster, orkut).

The term “Web 2.0” seems to be up for debate, but I would agree with one of the guys who helped coin the phrase, Tim O’Reilly, on what Web 2.0 is—> What is Web 2.0?

If you’re interested in Web 2.0 stuff and want an exaustive resource on Web 2.0, Ajax, next generation social engines (or whatever you want to call them) Check this out:

Heh…and here I was thinking in the less-sexy terms of “web-based applications”.

But then again I have a natural aversion to any online “thing” that has a description that includes the word “social”...wink

Hey fellow Michigander! I’m in Lansing Boyink!

I barely use flickr or delicious for the social aspects, it’s all about online storage for me. I can access my content from wherever I am as long as I have an internet connection - so can my friends. But I’m not trying to discount the importance or usefulness of the social aspect of these ‘wares’ to users.

But what are these ‘wares’?! The articles elamb cites are required reading imho, and they will help us understand the current era and what kind and how software is being created. However, what’s the name of this new branch of software? Web 2.0 describes an era or version, Ajax describes a programming methodology.

Webware? wWebapps? Can’t be ajaxapps because there’s flash-based apps that do the same things ajax-based apps do. 2.0apps? DuceApps?

I just need a way to tag them in delicious that doesn’t mix them in with an ‘era’ or ‘programming method’. It may seem fastidious, but this is a distinct new area of software, it needs a name.

‘Bout time we got more mid-westerners here…(I wonder how many folks know/remember that Slashdot was birthed right here in W. MI….wink )

I’m drawing a blank on any other terms…most likely because I’m a “pushing 40 cynic”...wink  I’m just seeing web based applications with some new features using a few new interface tricks but still essentially being software that solves a problem that runs in a browser.  Past that most of it still feels like hype to me…
