Hi,

I’m looking to surprise the wife with a trip to London and Amsterdam in March. I’m looking at this package and I’m wondering if any of you across the pond can make a recommendation on which of the two standard category hotels you would be best (or if the “budget” and “tourist” category ones will suffice). My wife’s never been out of the country (eek!) and I’ve never been to London, so I’m all ears. We’ll likely be looking to do all of the touristy things, so I’m hoping to be close to as much as possible.

Thanks for your advice! Can’t wait to get over there!

Phil

I’m not from London or Amsterdam (currently in Spain, actually) but visited London a few months ago. I would pick either of the two “standard” packages. I noticed they’re both on or near Bayswater Rd… which is where we stayed. We thought it was a great location… easy access to the tube… lots of shops, restaurants and pubs nearby, Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens across the street, and there are even Bus Tour stops on Bayswater Rd. If you want to walk, it’s not far to Marble Arch and Oxford Street… and the tube makes seeing all the attractions very convenient.

Good luck!

I’m living in London and used to live in Bayswater. It is definitely a good central place to stay (if a bit touristy). Hotels in the area are often large converted houses and the rooms can be a bit small if you choose budget, or even ‘tourist’. Some budget places will have a shared bathroom. The Thistle is directly opposite Kensington Gardens and is a fairly large hotel. I don’t really know the others. I would choose based on having my own bathroom and also on breakfast included (should be full breakfast each day). I’ve stayed in some really good small hotels, and some really bad large ‘name’ hotels.

Don’t know Amsterdam hotels at all as I have stayed out of town or camped so can’t help you there. Great city though.

In amsterdam a few months back, i stayed at hotel MAX. it was slightly out of the main tourist bit and was basic, it was for 4 of us boys so we went for the cheapest! My mother just returned yesterday from there and stayed in a nice apartment (3 sharing this one) ill post the name when i see her tonight.

That’s funny because you’re not the first person to tell me that.
