Ok, this is driving me nuts.  I just reinstalled EE 1.4 to see if it’ll go away but it doesn’t.  I can’t get a error dump either. Maybe its a database corruption?

No, a DB problem won’t cause a blank page.  You might find out from your host if they have disabled PHP error reporting.  Also, in your debugging prefs, make sure you have error reporting turned on.  It shouldn’t matter since you’ve hard coded it in your index.php file, but it won’t hurt.

Ok, I reached out to the hosting tech group to find out if they’ve disabled PHP error reporting.  I hopefully should know soon.

I also made sure that only the Super Admin can see the PHP error report.

Techincal support at my host, dreamhost, had said that they don’t have PHP error reporting turned on and that its something they don’t offer their customers.

What is the next step?  I’ve already reinstalled EE1.4.  I’ve tried my very old but trusty set of web templates.  Nothing seems to work.

Wait a minute, this only happened when I tried to manually update/import the current MySQL database with EE weblog posts from another MySQL database and older EE.  I began to recieve errors as I tried to import them and then aborted the process.  Could that be it?  That would be the only out of the ordinary thing I did from Jan 2 to when I discovered this problem on Jan 3/4.

That could possibly be it.

For testing purposes, reinstall using a different prefix, put in your templates, and see if the problem is there. If it is—then it may be related to your templates. If it isn’t—then it is probably data related.

Sue,

I’m a bit shaky on this stuff.  Should I create a 2nd test database and have EE resolve to that?  If yes, then where and what file do I edit to change the database location.  I can create a new MySQL pretty easy via Dreamhost.  I remember we had to choose that at the beginning of the ee install on a new server.

Thanks,
Tom

You could do that.. or you could choose a different prefix in your existing database.

But you need to do a brand new install to get the default templates to populate correctly.

Ok,

Help me out here, what and how do I choose a different prefix and when you mean a brand new install, does that mean EE or the database?

I need a little hand holding just to get started.

You choose a different prefix if you are installing into the SAME database- so that the new install doesn’t overwrite the existing tables- the install will give you the option.  If you put the new install in a separate database, you don’t need a different prefix (this is the option I’d pick, because I’d probably go back and drop the whole db once I got my old one working- however, some hosts only give you one database).
