Hi,

after almost one year without any knowledge about php/CSS/HTML with EE (now version 1.3.2) my project is almost finished.

The site is almost finished now, within 2 weeks this site is live.

Inside this website i have a OWN written plug-in for a event agenda! This works great and is using just 4 tags to use the event calender. When the calendar is finished i will donate this to the community as a plug-in with instructions. (check the agenda menu).

I’m still having trouble with the loading speed (to many Kb or to many grafical elements?). The old site is loading 4 a 5 secs faster.

Any comment is welcome but be gentle :)

The site URL: http://www.dancevenue.nl/ee

Used software:

- EE 1.3.2
- EE Forum 1.1.1
- EE plug in Event calendar 1.0beta
- phpadsnew (for rotating banners)
- phplist (integrated into EE thru the master console)

i hope you like this layout.

Seemed to load fairly fast, at least as fast as most sites.
Did spot something though, the center column ad is wider than the column and overlaps the right column obscuring the smaller ad at the top of that column.

On a personal not: Way too many flashing ads/headers, totally distracts me from the content. I would not visit the site often or return. Sorry.

sorry ? smile

About the ads, to many? Any suggestion to change this? Less on the left/right?

Told in this forum before, i’m not a designer or programmer so any help is welcome.

Rick

PS

But i’m proud off the Event calendar plug-in ! check agenda in the menu !!!

The event calendar is really nice. I’m not aware of the plugin you mentioned ... did you develop it? Is it available somewhere? Can you tell us some more about your solution for the event calendar?

And another question: Why did you choose to use PHPlist instead of the mailinglists available in EE?

Regarding the site, a couple of notes what might be possible to optimize:

1. It seems the code should cleaned up - its not really valid XHTML:

...
<
DIV id=picture>
<
H1 class='\"title\"'></H1>
<
H2></H2>
...
<
BR style="CLEAR: both"><!--<BR class=spacer>-->
...

Tags should be all in lower case, ids and classes surrounded by ” (non-curly), empty tags like <h2></h2> above should be avoided and tags like br, hr and img should have an implicit end tag, e.g. <br />. Thats not only “good coding style” but helps greatly regarding search engine positioning. Tip: use an HTML validator to find the problems in your templates.

2. Using Firefox 1.5, the page seems slightly broader than the browser window: I can scroll horizontally even in a 1400x1050 resolution. The problem remains in other browser window sizes.

3. In 1400 resolution, the header graphics looks great - but it doesn’t in 800 or 1024. The main object of the graphics is cut off.

4. It seems there are problems with character encoding on the right side - especially in the text “DISCOTHEQUE 29 OKTOBER 2005 CRUISE TERMINAL ROTTERDAM”.

Because you mentioned that you’re nor a designer neither a programmer, perhaps the following tools might be worth checking out:
Using Firefox with the Web Developer Extension, you can get a “new look” on your design. It allows to check all CSS code and even outline objects. Very useful for me when developing sites.

thnx MS

About the plug-in, in the plug in section of this forum there is more about this plug-in.

It’s a new build plug-in and in beta status now, it is build as a project between myself and a prgrammer. It uses 2 new tables (quit simple) and is totally CSS based. Because it is a plugin every CSS is on disk instead of inside the database.

It is still in beta but this week it will be finished (version 1). After this release i hope feedback will improve this. I will donate this plug-in thru eewiki as a free plug-in.

Thank you for the feedback about the site smile XHTML is hard !!!!!

@rikoos, to me it seems that you might have an encoding problem. Some of the titles in the interviews overview (edit: and other places too) show ? characters.

I’m using FF 1.5.
It automatically detected utf-8.

Maybe somebody else can confirm this.

edit: oops…ms already mentioned that
