Heh- ‘Best’ being a relative term, of course.

Anyway, I’m thinking of setting up a geek site for myself, as my fandom oriented stuff isn’t a good fit for geekly musings of a technical bent.  Now fandom- I know.  Geekdom- not so much.  So I’ve been surfing around, trying to get a handle on geeky musings and this whole ‘blog thing’ (which I still don’t entirely get the appeal of, but I’ve learned to deal with it).

So I’m curious- what blogs would you recommend I check out?  I tend to like what we call ‘newsletters’ in fandom terminology- blogs that give overviews of interesting stuff all in one handy spot.  I’m hunting mostly for stuff about “the blogsphere” (snerk).  I’d also like to stay up on xml-rpc/rss/etc stuff.  Also- I enjoy reading people throwing hissy fits at each other, which seems to happen an awful lot.  So yea- a broad range of opinions and FYI’s concerning blogs in general and syndication issues in particular.  Anyone got some cool blogs I should be subscribing to?  I’ve got a short list of stuff I’d stuck in bookmarks as interesting- but it’s a short list.  I haven’t really poked around all that much.

So far, my short list of useful potential blogs/feeds to follow includes:

The Blog Herald - newsletter overview of stuff about blogs/blogging
Whitespace- more design stuff oriented than my usual taste, but I keep finding myself getting sucked into the articles, which is always a good sign.
MarketingShift- um- this whole blog thing has a big commercial component to it- doesn’t it!  Still, interesting reading- lots of SEO/SE stuff with a blog slant.
Problogger- more stuff on blogs and blogging with a commercial slant to it.
Kottke.org - programing, media, some on blogging- seems less focused than the others, but an interesting read.  On my ‘maybe’ list.
Burningbird- some really neat stuff on some of the more social aspects of blogging.  Shall I pretend surprise this one’s by a woman?  Nope.  Found the blog via a link to her cool article on ‘Guys Don’t Link’.
O’Reilly Radar- won’t pretend I totally get the whole ‘O’Reilly’ org/group/whatever it is- but clearly it’s/they/he is worth keeping an eye on- this seemed the best overall blog to keep up to date on general happenings and an overview of what important geeks are tracking.
Doc Searls weblog- lots of techy, some overview type stuff, bit less focused on exactly what I’m interested in than some of the others- ‘maybe’ list.
Phil Ringnalda dot com - kinda overview stuff, good for feed stuff and snarky/wanky fun.
Intertwingly - Sam Ruby’s weblog - great for feed stuff.

So what else should I be adding to my feed reader- assuming I want to keep up with the state of the blog nation- or at least, the more geeky end of it.

You can see some of the sites I frequent over in the right navbar on my site.  That list is actually a bit out of date; I have a newer and more extensive one in the still-in-progress EE version of my site.  If you want to see that one send me an email or PM, Robin.

suicide girls

Snerk- remember, I’m a chick!  I prefer my hot, naked, people to have a… um, y chromosome!

And buzzmachine.com- I’d seen that one before, should have bookmarked it!  slashdot and wired also- though they both have so much material it can be hard to wade through to the bits I’m interested in.  Definitely have to check out the other ones- thanks!

ETA- your EE site is still a wip, Chris?  Hee- tell Rick to give you guys some time off to catch up on life!  I’ll drop a line- I’d definitely like to check the links.  I’ve poked around on LJ and Paul’s journals already.

Just curious, are you linking to girl geek sites also, or just going for general geek?

Yea I don’t keep my tech stuff listed in my links, so poking around on mine won’t help you out here.

Do you want gadget stuff too? Or just bloggy stuff?  Gadget stuff is much more fun, you know?

General geek sites, but I definitely like to have a nice cross-section of opinions/demographics.

The coder in me likes the technical end of things, and the sociologist in me tends to find the social aspects of blogging interesting- so it’s all good!

ETA- LJ, I’m not so into the gadget end of things or the hardware.  But discussions of php, xml, rss are all great, as well as evaluations of blogging, CMS and other software.  Hm- is that totally unclear!

If you like mac stuff:

http://daringfireball.com (though you have to donate to get access to the feed! I just visit the site.  Its good I just don’t want to pay money to get RSS feeds)

Totally off topic but I love it (and it does have an RSS feed):

Eh, that daringfireball thing has come with most of my news readers *chuckles* - I wonder if he’s securing or just obfuscating.

(Huh, I had no clue Daring Fireball required money for the feed.  I guess that’s a new thing because I’ve been subscribed to his feed for quite some time now.  Actually, I just went and visited the site and the feed is clearly linked at the bottom of the page.)

I suppose I should clarify on the daringfireball.com thing.  You have to donate for the full text feed (which are the feeds I prefer) since I like to read the articles whithin my RSS reader.

Regardless I love reading his stuff.
