EE hosting solution questions ?

Hello ,

I’m not sure if I should ask this here but on the hosting page when i clicked support I ended here so here i go :

- can i host a domain name with the FR extansion (had some problems before with the zonechecker ) I can try to solve this question myself If i have your DNS

- do you use Cpanel ? If not what do you use can i take a peak somewhere to look around ?

- I would go for shared basic 10 dollar a month but 400 mo seems really low ! nerver ever used more but still kind of scared if I had to and 20 dollars a month is to high for my purse :(

- can I host : joomla ,wordpress , and slideshowpro on your servers?

last but not least : is 10 gig transfert enough for 3 domains ? on big blog didn’t make it yet but who knows it might get very popular and two other simple site ? of course two of them would be running EE.

Thanks for your insights

best regards

I’m a web designer and i was thinking of using EE for my freelance portfolio. Do i need a commercial license for that?

Thanks in advance.

Want to move to EE. Should I wait for 2.0? And some other questions…

I’d like to move my site from Wordpress to Expression Engine.

I’ve got a local copy of the current Core version, have tinkered a little and watched some tutorials. It looks good, but I’ve been holding off learning it for fear that the new version will change the way things are done and it will be wasted effort to learn the old.

I have limited time to invest in learning a new system so I want to maximise my efforts. Should I therefore wait for 2.0 and learn that? And will the existing tutorials (Boyink, etc.) still apply to 2.0?

Also…

1) What is the best way of mapping my old Wordpress blog URLs to whatever EE creates? I don’t want to lose my current search engine rankings (not that they are that brilliant, but hey). Do I have to create a hand-coded bunch of redirects in .htaccess for everything? Or can I exactly match the URL scheme from my current blog, eg: domain.com/blog/2008/04/1/post-title/

2) Is it easy to skin the admin area of EE with my own brand?

3) If I want to develop a commercial site and a non-commercial site on the same EE installation, using the multiple site manager, how does the pricing work out? Do I have to pay a commercial fee AND a personal fee, or does the commercial fee cover both sites?

Thanks very much in advance for any advice.

Preview for Everybody, Full Article for Members Only

Hello. Apologies if this has been covered (I’m sure it has). I figure since this is a “pre-sales” forum, you all can be a little more forgiving of my haste.

We’d like to have a portion of our website where articles previews (Maybe a summary or just a paragraph) are viewable by all visitors but the full article is only accessible by “members”.

If the answer is yes, I’d be grateful if you could elaborate more on the features and capabilities of such a system.

Much appreciated.

EE 2.0 modest price increase

I was looking through the details of the new 2.0 version coming out and I saw that line “modest price increase”. This scares me. EE is allready a costly alternative to CMS. While you are expensive it is still worth it for the ease of use, trouble free operation and security. But a MODEST price increase to keep the software modern? That sounds like you are preparing people for a large hike in prices. I understand this new version required you to hire new people etc. But I would keep in mind how many resellers there are using this. We have to pass on this modest increase to our clients. Hopefully this hike won’t be high to the point of making resellers have to find a more affordable option.

Just my .2 cents as an ave web developer living in the US.

I was going to wait for the new 2.0 release before buying a few copies...but I think i’ll grab the current version while the prices as still low!

Is this possible with minimal hacking?

Here’s the technical scenario. Take note that this from a developer’s point of view. I need a CMS that can handle a featured on landing page for items on a weblog (probably a checkbox). I also need to upload photos that are associated to each item. So instead of uploading the images first, then creating a new item in a weblog and then adding the uploaded files, I’d like the photos or audio files to be uploaded after they’ve entered a body for an item. I’m not too sure people can create user profiles, but that would be a nice addition although not important right now. It this possible without hacking the core?

Just a quick question, I am considering buying EE for 7+ web sites… I know there is no release date as of yet but what about upgrade options? I don’t want to buy 1.6 if i have to pay for 2.0. Just a simple question. Thanks for the response.

Corporate Deployment w/ Individual & Shared Content & Unique Brands

Hello, I’ve posted a project below and would appreciate feedback and suggestions for how we might accomplish the following use the Expression Engine. Thanks in advance.

Scope:

Ninety (90) Vertical Websites with similar, yet unique content. Each site will have individual contributors (content) as well as shared corporate content.

Objective:

Rapidly deploy unique websites for an industry vertical that consist of the following:

- Main page with content areas that dynamically display new posts
o Last 10 Posts from All Site Blogs (Corporate and Blogs 1 thru 3)
o Last 5 Posts from Blog 1
o Last 5 Posts from Blog 2
o Last 5 Posts from Blog 3
o Editable Content Area driven from a remote text file. The client will not have access to the CMS; therefore we will create a simple interface for them to edit a text file to populate two text areas on the main page. (Open to other methodologies)

- Three (3) unique blogs that only relate to the individual site with one to five contributors. Visitors are read only.

- One to Three Company Wide Blogs that will update the main page list (“Last 10 Posts from All Site Blogs”) on each website. These Blogs will appear in the navigation of the website and follow the CSS Templates for the site with the content originating from the Corporate Website Blog.

- Twenty+ Company Wide Content Pages. These pages will have a variety of content that when changed will populate across all sites. Since each page will have one of twelve CSS Templates the content must “fit” into each site seamlessly.

- Unique Public Wiki w/ User Management Feature for each site.

- Unique Calendar for Each site.

- Use of “tags” for Company Name, Division Name, Corporate Name, City, State and ID#, so that as vernaculars change we can change a Tag that will re-brand use of the names throughout each page.

o For example if the Company name is “Group, Inc” and the company changes its name to “Group Associates, LLC” we could simply change the field for Company Name and all instances of the Company Name throughout all sites would change.

- We will need to understand how the Templates function in the ExpressionEngine environment. We envision:

o Using one of four CSS for each of the twelve templates for each site. (Essentially the each division may select from forty-eight possible combinations).
o Each division will have a unique header logo.
o To accomplish this we anticipate referencing a unique CSS for each site. This would allow us to reference the appropriate colors and logo files from within the CSS.
o Further, there is javascript that includes unique identifiers for each site. We envision hosting these scripts in a separate file and referencing the generic filename within the template so that each site may effectively use their own unique identifiers.
o We are open to other suggestions that may be more appropriate.

- We expect to have the solution professionally hosted with management support contracts.

I anticipate more questions and welcome to you to contact me with further information.

Developers and Professional Service Organizations are welcome to reply to this post with their contact information if interested. While we have capabilities in-house, we are open to working with other developing groups that may offer certain “value-added” features such as: Rapid deployment, initial development and configuration, on-going support, relevant expertise and contribution to the project.

Best Regards,
Drew

Pay per entry?

I’m interested in building a site that is essentially a job board. With EE, each job would essentially be a weblog entry, but I need it to work such that employers can pay with a credit card (or paypal if need be) before their entry is submitted. Is this possible?
