If you wait too long (not sure of exact length) and type a reply and click submit, page reloads and loose typed response.  Happens often on the EE forums.  Using latest version of Safari.

... As in open a quick reply or full reply and go get some lunch and come back sort of length.

Blair, this is known behavior when the Secure Forms feature is used to combat against cross-site request forgery.  The time to live for the form is two hours.  It might be shorter if your ISP frequently rotates your IP address as well.

And there is no way for notify when this happens?  No auto-save feature?  Does this happen in the EE backend too?  Loosing something I typed I would defiantly translate as a bug, as anyone not as web savvy to know about ‘cross-site request forgery.’  Just a thought.

No, currently the session just expires, but most browsers will retain what you type by using the back button.  The control panel in 2.x does have an auto-save for the publish page, but it is not a feature of the front end or of 1.x.
