1.6 Preview Movie and Multiple Rick Birthday Contest
We are in the middle of two significant events. The first is Rick’s birthday, which was yesterday. “Working with this fine team I don’t feel a day over 90” stated Mr. Ellis. The second event is the imminent release of ExpressionEngine 1.6. The internal beta is going very well, the docs are 99% done, the advisory board has advised, and the Pro Network given a sneak preview a couple days ago. The dev team is taking a small breather this weekend and the time is nigh for some foolery, celebration, and weekend fun. This is also a rather long post but if you read to the end there is a contest to win a free copy of the new Multiple Site Manager, plus you get to see a scary picture of “angry Rick.”
Let’s start with ExpressionEngine 1.6, which we think is the most significant release yet. Though 1.6 includes a slew of new features like Hidden Templates and Category Custom Fields, it’s the Multiple Site Manager that marks a substantial new milestone in EE’s history. The Multiple Site Manager (sold separately) is an expansion to ExpressionEngine (not a Module, Plugin, or Extension) that will enable you to manage multiple websites from a single EE installation. And yes, this includes multiple forums as well thanks to the new Discussion Forums 2.0 (free upgrade with active Discussion Forum Download Account). Derek Jones put together a walk through movie that demos how we use the Multiple Site Manager to run the EllisLab Network.
There is also a high demand new module in 1.6 that is included for free, though we’re saving details on that last one until actual release because we need one surprise. But maybe you can guess what it is:
The default theme in 1.6 is now a slightly modified version of Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain’s beautiful EE Control Panel theme. The old theme will still be available as a “classic” theme.
I’ll do my best to field questions you have on 1.6 before the release but please do not email or PM us directly or ask for early betas (not going to happen).
The Multiple Rick Manager Contest
To celebrate Rick’s birthday and the impending release we’re giving away 3 copies of the Multiple Site Manager. All you have to do is take one or more of the pictures of Rick below and do something with them. Here are the rules.
1. Keep it clean, no naughty words or images.
2. You can enter as many times as you like, but only win once (meaning one person can’t win all three copies).
3. A free copy of the Multiple Site Manager will be given to the winner in each category:
- Best technical entry (for those of you with elite Photoshop skills)
- Most creative entry
- Laugh out loud funny entry
Note: You don’t have to specify which category your entry is for.
4. The judges are the EllisLab team. Judging this type of contest is obviously very subjective. By entering you agree not to complain if you lose. You can lament, but not complain. Fair enough.
5. The contest ends on Tuesday, June 19th, at 12pm Central Time.
