Nick, as this is a live site are you able to roll back your files and DB to 1.6.8 while we attempt to reproduce the issue?

I can reinstall 1.6.8 I guess, but how do I roll back the DB? Re-upload the backed-up DB file prior to the 1.6.9 install… do I need to do that also?

Hi Nick,

Yes, you will need to do that because the DB schema changed between 1.6.8 and 1.6.9.

Cheers

Yikes!! I’ve never uploaded a database before… Do I simply upload my SQL backup file via PHPMyAdmin? Is there a Wiki entry on how to do this?

Also, in this case, would I reinstall the DB first, or reinstall 1.6.8 first? One bad move, and I can see this going horribly wrong(!)

Hi Nick,

Are you able to get your host to do this for you? That would be the best option. If you are not able to do so, you would make sure that your site is offline, upload the SQL backup with PHPMyAdmin and then copy back your 1.6.8 files, then clear the cache folder (apart from the index.html file). However, I do recommend that you ask your host to help with this.

Cheers

Greg,

I’ll try… The host for this site is mediaTemple, so it shouldn’t be a problem. I need to make sure some of the recent stuff on the site (template updates) are backed up first. This is an MSM install supporting 2 sites, so I guess the rollback will affect everything done on both sites in the last few days (since the upgrade to 1.6.9)?

After reverting both DB and files to 1.6.8, do I have to run the update wizard again?

UPDATE: mediaTemple only has a backup from the last 24 hours or so, and i need to roll back almost 7 days. Will have to do this manually then.  rolleyes

Honestly, I feel really uncomfortable about restoring everything to 1.6.8 ... there’s just way too much risk involved for the client. If it was my own site, I wouldn’t mind, but if this doesn’t work I could end up with a site that’s completely #@*ked, and the loss of about 3 year’s worth of data. Is there any other way we can debug this?

Hi Nick,

I made the suggestion to rollback because you had a live site and didn’t sound comfortable with the way it was displaying certain entries. It was only a suggestion, so if you are more uncomfortable with restoring a database do not feel as though you have to do this. Supporting the usage of phpMyAdmin is a bit outside of our support scope, but we will do our best to help.

As it sounds like you have a backup of the site’s database in both 1.6.8 and 1.6.9 states, there should not be any data loss regardless of what you choose to do. If you want to try a rollback, you would restore the 1.6.8 files, restore the database from the 1.6.8 SQL backup, and there should not be a need to run the update wizard.

Thanks Brandon,

I’m going to try and set up a local MAMP install and see if I can debug it that way.
