Howdy-

We’ve just published a new extension for EE:

Here’s the idea behind Reeveal Comments: All the comments associated with an entry are accessible—and can be managed—from the same page you edit the entry on.  No more hunting for the right dropdown; no more digging to find the comment you’re after.  Just open up the entry and click the “Comments” tab.

Let us know what you think!

I just posted version 1.0.2, a bug-fix release.  Enjoy!

Wish I had found this extension a couple months back ...  I’ve had two recent clients have difficulty understanding how to locate and manage blog comments in the CP ??  Reeveal has the potential to make future EE training much easier.

I’ve tested this on my own site and found an initial conflict with LG LiveLook that disappeared after a reinstall.  I can’t replicate the problem.

While I still prefer the default EE batch comment management for my own purposes, one suggested usability improvement that will make this extension invaluable for future client projects:

Delete (comment spam)

Nice work!

Hey Paul, I agree, it would be nice to bring more comment management functionality into the tool, such as delete and edit.  Until then, I hope it’s useful for some instances!

If you see any recurrence of that conflict, please let us know.

Thanks!

I got this error on my entry page:

Notice: Undefined variable: tab_content in /home/webincep/public_html/system_wi/extensions/ext.reeveal_comments.php on line 165

Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /home/webincep/public_html/system_wi/extensions/ext.reeveal_comments.php:165) in /home/webincep/public_html/system_wi/extensions/ext.lg_htaccess_generator_ext.php on line 672

The functionality still works, however.

It would be nice if the extension would clear the cache when you ajax a comment open or closed.  I still had to do that to get the comment to show up.

However, fantastic idea!

Thanks, Chad!

I’ll dig into Reeveal Comments and fix that notice.  I’ll also look into the cache clearing.

Hi Chad-

What version are you running?  There were some earlier reports of that notice, but they were fixed in 1.0.2.

In any event, I just posted 1.0.4 to the Hop Studios site.  This release includes cache clearing on comment open/close.  Let me know how it works for you!

Hi Justin,

Just bought Reeveal Comments extension and found that it does not play well with Publish Tweaks extension.

If Publish Tweaks extension is disabled, then Reeveal Comments works correctly, but with Publish Tweaks enabled clicking on Comments tab does not work - no comments are shown.

Hi Laisvunas-

Thanks for the report.  I’ll get a copy of Publish Tweaks and figure out what’s going on.

Hi Laisvunas-

I have Publish Tweeks 0.8, Reeveal Comments 1.0.4, and EE 1.6.7 (20090320).  When both add-ons are enabled, both seem to work fine for me.  What versions are you running?  Are you running any other add-ons that modify the edit page?

One issue I’ve noticed with Reeveal is that, if you’re too quick to click on the Comments tab, you might get there before all the javascript has loaded, and you’ll get nothing.  It’s on the fix list.

Maybe publish tweeks is slowing the JS load?  I have the same problem.

I really like Hop Studios add-ons.  You guys do good work and I hope you update them for 2.0.

I like this plugin but only seeing 3 comments at a time is very fussy to work with. When I have 60 comments to sift through it is really frustrating to use Reeveal.  If you could let the admin change the number of comments displayed - or consider condensing each comment to a preview so more can fit on the screen.  Anything would make that process easier.

Hi eyevariety-

Thanks for your feedback!  We’re planning to port our add-ons—at least the ones people use—to EE 2.0 when it comes out.

There is a setting in the extension settings, “Number of comments to display per page”, that may help?  Let me know if it’s not working for you.

If the JS load really is the issue, we should be able to prove it just by waiting a bit longer.  Since I haven’t been able to replicate this issue on my test machine, can anyone who’s having it let me know if Reeveal works under the following circumstances?

1. You have the latest version of Reeveal and Tweeks, and they’re both enabled and configured
2. You go to edit an entry that has comments, and then wait.
3. Keep waitin’...
4. When it’s really, really obvious that the page has loaded, you click on the “Comments” tab.

If that works, then I’ll try to figure out how to speed up the JS load, or otherwise handle the situation.

One other question: Are you using JQuery for the CP?

Thanks!

Is there a way to turn it off for some weblogs? I don’t see it as a setting under the Publish Page Customization panel

Hi Jeremy-

Great question—at the moment, I think there isn’t a way to selectively enable it.  I’ll add this to the feature list.  Thanks!

Can a moderator post a response comment via the cp with this?

That would really help the comment workflow make sense.

As I see it, right now if a mod wants to post a response, they need to go out to the entry, post it then come back to the cp and mark it approved.  Really a long way around.  If a mod could manage and respond in one place that would be a big plus.

I gotta learn how to start writing add ons!

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim-

That’s an interesting idea.  It’s not within the scope of Reeveal Comments right now, but I see what you mean, WRT the workflow for moderators.  If you write an addon for that, I bet folks will appreciate it…

There was a Movable Type plugin that we use (with MT3) and would be nice to have an EE equivalent for when I get that site ported over.

Just my 2¢ (probably worth 1¢).
