Extension name: Bn_short_name_ext

This extension will display your custom field {short_name} after the field label in the publish/edit form. This will also add the weblog {short_name} to an edit tab dropdown menu.

ex:

*Descriptive Custom Field Name {inscrutable_short_name}

It will only work with EE 1.6.5 or higher. (The hook it uses was added in 1.6.5)

use: if you’re tired of hopping back and forth to your “edit custom field names” page and then clicking through to the field group to look up a custom field name when you’re generating your templates, this will make your life a little easier. Once installed, If you visit your publish/edit pages, your custom field short names will be visible after the field label.

caveat: It’s not limited to any specific user group or level, anyone that has access to your publish/edit forms on the control panel will see this, which may cause confusion with any non-developers publishing on your site.

note: This will not affect any stand-alone entry forms.

Please post here if you have any issues using this.

Works great. Only problem I had on one site is that something goes wrong with the Gypsy extension when this is installed.

Nice addition though so thanks!

Best wishes,

Mark

Wow, that’s the first time I heard of that one,  I’ll look into Gypsy sometime today.

I expect I need to add in a “last_call” or whatever to my extension, or set the priority lower on the call. I’ll look into that tonight (probably.)

Yeah, it uses the “publish_form_field_query” hook. So far I hadn’t run into any extensions using that hook, so I wasn’t too worried about it, but I think the fix will probably be pretty simple.

heh. /me knocks on wood.

Thanks for looking into this. Keeping my eye on when it’s done as this is a great idea for an extension and apart from the errors I was getting this is a great addition.

Best wishes,

Mark

OK. Updated above. I tested with a copy of Gypsy here, and the issue is fixed. This will now either run on it’s own, or run on the back of Gypsy, or other extensions using the same hook.

Absolutely perfect! Works brilliantly.

Thanks for sharing this one. Although I always name my fields the same way every time and pretty much always know what I have called them this will definitely come in handy for client sites.

Best wishes,

Mark

We use a lot of custom field names for very specific ‘blog’ types. One section might have 20 field names, another might have 3, we might use one group on multiple sections. It gets out of control for us. Then the client changes the label name or something, making it more confusing.

Consistency would be lovely. I should look into that.

Likewise to the above, LG Data Matrix generates this error when BN Add Short_name is installed:

Edit: I spoke to Leevi about this, and he thinks the issue is with LG Data Matrix and will try to issue a fix for it ASAP.

Hi Mark,

I posted info about this extension here and about SL Developer info - here.

I update Wiki’s modules, extensions and plugins pages quite often - it is much easier to find interesting add-ons when you need them.

Aha I see now. Sorry I didn’t know if you meant Wicked but in some new young speak as I’m getting a lot older these days and so I’m not so hip nowadays wink or if you meant a WIKI somewhere. I thought you might have your own WIKI somewhere with all the information on or something. grin

This extension has been updated slightly. This extension will now display the weblog short name in an edit drop down menu. Find the most up-to-date version in the first post.
